The North Devon 100 (ND-100) has evolved for 2014 from the ‘Le Tour de Devon 120’. Here is a short piece about how we arrived at ND-100.
Phil Boyen, whose brain child this was, started cycling in 2012 for general fitness but also to see some of the gorgeous Devon countryside from his bike saddle rather than his Lorry seat.
As his love for cycling grew he suggested that a few friends and himself have a sponsored cycle ride to raise money for ‘Help 4 Heroes’, a charity close to his heart as he was an ex serving soldier.
As discussions amongst us all evolved so did the amount of cyclists wanting to ride with us. So we then made up a Facebook page to invite others to join us for the day on our 120 mile ride of North and East Devon. Little did we know at this time what a great day was in store!
As with most events we needed a lot of support from local businesses so that everyone cycling had a safe and enjoyable ride.
Our idea was to involve family and friends and for them to be a huge part of our event, not just for it to be about the cycle ride. With this in mind, a small committee was formed and the planning commenced. A very successful ‘Family Day’ was organised for which we received so much positive feedback from those who attended.
As mentioned earlier, we have changed the name of the event to the ‘North Devon 100’. Our reasoning for this is that we would like to raise monies for local North Devon charities as well as one main charity.
Our main charity for 2016 is ‘Chestnut Appeal’ and our local charity is ‘Combe Martin Football Club’.
We will be sending you out a sponsorship form with the rider pack and we ask riders to attempt to get some sponsorship for our chosen charities. We ask for a minimum of £20.00 if possible but anything is greatly received. Each year all monies raised get distributed evenly.
The Cycle Routes
The other is that we are having two routes, a 100 mile route ( M Route ) and a 100K / 60 miles ( K Route ) so all levels of cycling ability can be part of our event. This isn’t going to be a race and it’s not timed, it is just fun for all to ride at their own pace, knowing it’s all for charity.
The ride will start from ‘Combe Martin Football Club’ (CMFC) at 0800 on Sunday 1st May 2016. We ask riders to be ready for the safety brief at 0745 prompt. Parking will be available at CMFC for the duration of the event and will be open from 0700. We have overflow car parks available within a short distance of the event, but we ask riders to share transport if possible.
The ‘Family Fun Day’
Will be starting from mid-day and will be open to everyone. It will be an opportunity to support the riders as they return and have fun with family and friends.
At the park will be Bouncy Castles, Stalls, BBQ, Raffle plus other activities to keep the kids and parents entertained. Throughout the afternoon we will be having music from local artists and ‘Street Sounds’.
The 2015 event raised £5000
North Devon Hospice received £2500
